GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team placed six players on the Peach Belt Conference's All-Academic team, the PBC office announced today.
Jace Bennefield, Chandler Carey, Sydney Grimes, Abby Harris, Kasey Rogers, and Brianna Surrento earned all-academic honors. Carey made the team for the third consecutive year, while Rogers earned her second straight honor.
To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility. The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee the program.
Bennefield, a sophomore from Graniteville, S.C., has appeared in 32 games and scored 12 runs this season for the Bearcats.
Carey, a senior business major from Hull, Ga., drove in a team-high 29 runs and batted .282 on the year, catching in 45 of Lander's 46 games.
Grimes, a junior exercise science major from Hoschton, Ga., hit .336 on made just one error in 99 chances at second base.
Harris, a sophomore health promotions major from Chesnee, S.C., appeared in 31 games with a .364 on-base percentage and four steals.
Rogers, a senior exercise science major from Bennettsville, S.C., played in 43 games with three doubles and 10 RBI on the year.
Surrento, a senior business major from Long Beach, Miss., batted a team-high .385 with five home runs at the plate, while tossing 29.1 innings in the circle.
