Bearcats take game two to split doubleheader against Coker

GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team blanked Coker in game two of Saturday's doubleheader to earn a split in front of a season-high 265 fans at Doug Spears Field.

Lander (16-12) scored early in game one on a pair of errors. Kelli McCormack to reach second base on a dropped fly ball in right field and Delaney Guerrero's ensuing bunt attempt was thrown away, allowing McCormack to race home and give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.

Coker (22-8) fought back and took the lead in the sixth inning with a pair of runs, then held on as Taylor Forehand (4-1) retired the final six batters she faced in order.

Ashley Vinson (6-6) allowed one earned run on six hits for the Bearcats with two strikeouts and a walk in a complete-game effort.

The Bearcats once again grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second game. Guerrero led off the bottom of the second with a single and stood on third with two outs. Making her first career start, Bridgett Tierney chopped a grounder down the third base line and beat the throw to first, allowing Guerrero to score and put Lander on top.

Sydney Grimes added to the Bearcat lead in the fourth inning. With two outs and runners on the corners, Grimes blasted her first home run of the season over the centerfield wall to make the score 4-0.

Abby Killian (9-4) twirled a complete-game five-hit shutout, striking out seven on the night. Christine Carver (5-6) allowed four runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings as the losing pitcher.

The 265 fans at both games marked the ninth and 10th-largest single game crowds in program history.

Lander hosts Wingate at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
