GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team defeated Lees-McRae, 4-0, on a rain-shortened day one at the Bearcat Round Robin at Doug Spears Field.
Lander (12-4) had its night game against Mars Hill cancelled due to inclement weather.
After stranding five runners through the first three innings of the first game of the day, the Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Ashley Vinson doubled to left field and came around two batters later on a two-bagger from Kasey Rogers.
Lander added to the lead in the fifth inning when Delaney Guerrero reached second on alert baserunning after a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt brought Guerrero to third and a walk to Brianna Surrento put runners on the corners. Guerrero then scored on an error and Vinson put the game away with a two-out, two-run double to push the Bearcats' lead to 4-0.
Vinson (5-2) retired the final 11 Bobcats she faced, tossing a complete-game four-hitter with two strikeouts. Skylar Edwards (1-2) allowed four runs, one earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks for Lees-McRae.
The Bearcats will face Lees-McRae at 11:00 a.m. and Mars Hill at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
