GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Lander softball team split its final two games of the Gulf Shores Invitational on Sunday, notching a 7-3 win over Lee and falling to No. 11-ranked Alabama Huntsville, 6-3.
Lander (3-2) jumped on Lee (3-2) with three runs in the first inning. Chandler Carey opened the scoring with a two-run double and Delaney Guerrero followed with an RBI single to put the Bearcats up 3-0.
The Flames would answer with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame to pull within two runs, but Lander continued to extend the lead with a sacrifice fly from Brianna Surrento that plated Morgan Watson in the second inning. Guerrero struck for her second RBI single in the third and came around on a Watson double to make the score 6-1.
Lee managed runs in the third and fifth innings, but could not rally as Carey added another RBI with a sac fly in the fourth. Taylor De Adder (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits with three walks in 1.0 inning.
Alabama Huntsville (3-3) took a 3-0 lead on the Bearcats in the first inning before Lander trimmed the deficit to one on a two-run single from Watson in the top of the fourth. Two more Charger runs in the bottom of the fourth gave UAH a 5-2 lead, but Lander answered again on a Guerrero groundout that scored Abby Harris.
UAH added another run in the bottom of the sixth to cap the scoring. Sydnee Uhlman (1-0) earned the win for the Chargers, tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Lexi Griffin (0-1) took the loss for Lander, allowing three runs on two hits in 1.0 inning.
