GREENWOOD – The Lander men's tennis team saw four players receive All-Peach Belt Conference honors at the league banquet on Thursday night. Eirik Groner and the tandem of Axel Cronje and Adam Elliget were first team selections, while Ozan Cildir took home second team honors. In addition, Groner received the conference's Elite 15 Award as the student-athlete participating in the conference tournament with the highest cumulative GPA.
The Bearcats have had four different players earn all-conference honors in three consecutive seasons.
Groner, a three-time all-conference honoree, is 7-3 on the season and 6-2 in PBC action. The Oslo, Norway, native has been ranked in the national singles rankings each of the last three weeks, climbing as high as No. 39. He is the first Bearcat to earn all-PBC honors in three different seasons since Vincent Verpeaux, who was named all-conference from 2012-14.
Cronje and Elliget are 13-3 overall on the season and ranked as the No. 3 doubles tandem in the nation. They have served as Lander's No. 1 doubles pairing in every match they've played together this season, going 7-2 against PBC opponents. The junior and sophomore become the fifth doubles team in the last seven years to earn first-team all-PBC accolades for the Bearcats.
Cildir is tied for the team lead with 11 singles victories this season, going a perfect 7-0 at the No. 2 spot. A senior from Halmstad, Sweden, Cildir has won double-digit singles decisions in each of his four seasons in Greenwood, tallying 55 career victories. He was also a second-team all-conference performer as a junior.
Lander faces No. 16-ranked North Georgia in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m.
