Baseball suffers series sweep at Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Lander baseball team fell twice on Sunday to Flagler in a Peach Belt Conference series on the road.

Lander (8-11, 4-5 PBC) and Flagler (10-8, 5-4 PBC) resumed Saturday's game, which was suspended due to weather in the fifth inning before playing the final contest of the series.

The Saints led 6-1 entering the seventh inning of the first game before Lander mounted a comeback. Roury Glanton homered down the left field line in the top of the seventh and a pair of RBI from Colton Yeager and Mike Fitschen in the eighth pulled the Bearcats within two runs. However, Flagler posted two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the series.

Davis Cunningham (2-2) was saddled with the loss for Lander after allowing five runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Flagler's Robert Girgis (3-0) earned the win, allowing one run in 5.0 innings. Blair Calvo tossed 4.0 innings of relief to pick up the save.

In the weekend's final game, Lander struck first on an RBI double from Nathan Schreckengost in the top of the first. The Saints answered with two first-inning runs and another in the second to build a 3-1 lead.  The Bearcats cut the deficit to one as Kyle Jenkins drove in Yeager with an RBI groundout in the sixth, but Flagler added another run with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Joseph Whitt (3-2) allowed three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings for the Bearcats, while Ryan Ashworth (2-2) took the win, surrendering two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. Nick Martinez pitched 3.0 shutout innings for the save.

Lander hosts Nova Southeastern in a non-conference series at Dolny Stadium next weekend.
