ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Weston Lawing, Patrick Grady and Chris Hyatt all homered in the first game, while Connor Lewis batted 4-for-6 with five RBI in the second to lead the No. 7-ranked Lander baseball team to a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep against Flagler College at Drysdale Field. Lander won the first game, 11-6, and the second, 13-5, in the PBC opener for both teams.
Lander improves to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the PBC, while Flagler drops to 7-4, 0-2. The two teams will complete the three-game series beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.
In the first game, Lander's Dylan Wolchick (2-0) earned the win after striking out seven, walking one and allowing three earned runs on eight hits in six inning pitched.
Flagler's Danny Brown (1-1) took the loss, striking out 12, walking four and allowing three earned runs on seven hits in five innings pitched.
The Saints went up 1-0 lead in the first when Brett Moreland's groundout plated Jake Hanson.
Lander took a 2-1 lead in the second after Hyatt's RBI double plated Lawing and Colby Painter went home on Austin Dunn's sacrifice fly. Lawing then stroked a solo home run in the fourth to give Lander a 3-1 advantage.
The Bearcats made it 6-1 in the fifth when Erik Lunde scored an unearned run on Lawing's bases-loaded walk and Dunn followed with a two-RBI single to right center.
Hanson's RBI double in the bottom of the inning trimmed the margin to 6-2 when it plated Andrew Brodbeck.
Flagler added two more runs in the sixth on Tyler Vanover's solo homer and Mitchell's run via a Lander throwing error.
Hyatt's solo homer in the seventh put Lander up 7-4, but Flagler responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning when Moreland's RBI single scored Joe Post.
Grady's solo homer in the eighth combined with Hyatt's RBI single that plated Connor Lewis extended the Bearcat advantage to 9-5.
Vanover's solo homer in the ninth gave the Saints their final score.
For Lander, Hyatt went 3-for-3, while Ramos, Grady, Lewis and Dunn had two hits each.
In the second game, Chess Malone (2-0) was awarded the win after striking out four, walking one and allowing three earned runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings.
Flagler's Justin Ratte (1-1) suffered the loss, striking out four and allowing six earned runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings.
After Flagler took a 1-0 lead on McKenna's RBI single in the second inning, Lander went up 4-1 in the third on an RBI single by Grady, a two-RBI single by Lewis and a Lawing sacrifice fly.
Flagler cut the lead to 4-2 in the third on Vanover's RBI double.
The Bearcats extended their lead to 6-2 in the fifth when Grady tripled in Lunde and Lewis doubled in Grady.
Vanover's two-run homer cut the Lander lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth.
Dunn scored the Bearcats seventh run when he went home on a Graham Ramos RBI single in the sixth, and Lander added three more when Lewis' smacked a two-RBI double and Harvey scored on a throwing error.
Lander picked up three more runs in the eighth. Lawing doubled, stole third and scored on a passed ball, then Jeff May tripled in Painter, and Dunn singled in May.
For Lander, Ramos batted 5-for-6, while Grady, Dunn and Harvey had two hits each.
