Monica Shorter enters her fifth season as Lander's assistant softball coach. Shorter was hired in July of 2015.
Lander went 32-18 in 2018, notching the most wins for the program since 2005 and its best winning percentage since 1999. The Bearcats won their first Peach Belt Conference Tournament game in eight years to advance to the tournament semifinals.
The 2016 Bearcats posted a 26-21 overall record, their first winning season since 2003. Lander advanced to the PBC Tournament for the first time since 2010 and set a school record for conference wins in a single season.
A native of Chardon, Ohio, Shorter served as the assistant coach at Coker College during the 2013-14 season and previously coached for two seasons at Berkshire High School in Burton, Ohio.
Following her prep career at Chardon High, where she played softball and volleyball, she signed with the University of Akron and earned her bachelor's degree in Sports Science with an Emphasis in Coaching. She later earned her master's in Collegiate Athletic Administration at Coker.
With a passion for cooking, Monica successfully completed a one-year culinary certificate program at the International Culinary Arts and Sciences Institute (ICASI) in Chesterland, Ohio.
Monica began playing travel ball at age 11 and in 2006 her team won third place in the ASA 18U Gold Nationals.
