MORROW, Ga. – The No. 25-ranked Lander women's basketball team got a career-high 18 rebounds from Chelsea Mitchell and 16 points from Breshay Johnson as the Bearcats posted an 83-56 Peach Belt Conference road win over Clayton State on Monday afternoon.
Mitchell netted 13 points, while Johnson added 11 rebounds. The double-doubles were the fourth and fifth of the season for Mitchell and Johnson, respectively. Destinee Langford scored 12 points and Christal Williams chipped in 10 points. Jessica Harris led a Bearcat defense forced 32 turnovers, recording six steals on the afternoon. Victoria Baldwin connected on 5-of-7 three-point attemps as the Bearcats shot a season-high 57.1% from beyond the arc. Clayton State came into the game as the top three-point defense in the conference.
Lander (13-3, 8-2 PBC) rebounded from its first loss in over a month Saturday at Georgia College to win its fifth straight over the Lakers (7-8, 4-5 PBC). The Bearcats used a 10-0 run midway through the first quarter to pull away, as Clayton State never pulled within one possession the rest of the way.
Johnson bounced back from her worst showing of the year at Georgia College to lead the team in scoring, despite attempting a season-low three free throws. Mitchell's 18 rebounds were the most by any Bearcat since Johnson's 18-rebound effort against Limestone on Dec. 14, 2016. Mitchell also went 5-of-6 from the free-throw line as Lander shot 78.9% from the stripe.
The win puts Lander a half-game behind North Georgia for first place in the PBC.
The Bearcats return home for the first time in 11 days on Wednesday night as Lander takes on Young Harris. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Finis Horne Arena.
