No. 15 Lady Bearcats bow to Carson-Newman in OT

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The No. 15 Lander women's basketball team placed four players in double figures Sunday afternoon, but fell to Carson-Newman College in overtime, 88-82, in a non-conference game.

Lander moves to 2-2 overall, while Carson-Newman improves to 4-1.

Ciara Lyons and Precious Elkins led the Lander attack with a game-high 17 points each, while Jasmine Judge netted 15 and Brittni Johnson 12. Elkins connected on 8-of-11 field goals, while Lyons made 7-of-11 from the field and Judge 5-of-8 from the three-point line. Elkins also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Janyce Ealey had seven. Mukia Myrick led the team in assists with seven.

Zoriah Williams, who nabbed a game-high nine rebounds, led six Lady Eagles in double figures with 14 points, while Shannon Depew had 13, Rechelle Dye 12, Whitney Moody and Nikki James 11 each, and Courdne Miles 10.

Carson-Newman scored the first four points of the overtime on a layups by Moody and Megan Hunter to give the Lady Eagles a 79-75 advantage with 3:57 remaining.

Johnson's fastbreak layup cut the Lady Eagle margin to 79-77, but C-N bounced right back to take a four-point lead on a Williams' basket at 2:45.

Myrick's three cut the margin to 81-80 with 2:21 left, then a Hunter goal made it 83-80 with 1:45 remaining. Lander's Kaylyn Smalls put back her own missed shot to cut the lead to 83-82 at 1:11, but C-N bounced right back with a Dye basket to go up 85-82 with 53 seconds remaining.

Lander connected on 33-of-75 field goal attempts for 44 percent, including 9-of-26 three pointers for 34.6 percent. The Lady Bearcats were 7-of-14 from the foul line for 50 percent.

Carson-Newman made 31-of-59 floor shots for 52.5 percent, including 6-of-15 threes for 40 percent. The Lady Eagles were 20-of-29 from the free throw line for 69 percent.

C-N edged Lander on the boards, 42-41.

Lander broke a 5-5 tie at 17:39 on a Judge three then stretched the margin to 15-8 on a Myrick trey at 15:45.

Carson-Newman responded with a 9-2 run of their own and tied the game at 17-17 on a Nikki James layup with 12:38 remaining in the half.

The Lady Eagles took their first lead at 19-17 on a Hunter layup at 11:19 and dropped in two more baskets by Moody to make it 23-17 at 10:16.

The Lady Bearcats regained the lead at 25-23 with 7:33 left in the half on Johnson's three pointer, then another three by Judge made it 28-25 at 5:33.

C-N came right back to take a 29-28 advantage on a pair of Courdne Miles free throws at 4:34. The Lady Eagles built their lead to 38-30 on Shannon Depew's three at 2:08, but Lander battled back to cut the margin to four, 40-36, at halftime.

Elkins opened the second half with a layup and Judge added another three to give Lander a 41-40 margin with 19:18 remaining in the game.

Through ties at 44, 51, 53 and 63, neither team led by more than three points for most of the second half.

A Johnson steal at 3:11 led to a Lyons fastbreak layup and a 72-69 lead, then Johnson netted a three at 2:29 to give Lander a 75-69 advantage.

Hunter's three at 1:48 cut the Lander lead to 75-72, a Dye free throw made it 75-73 at 1:05, then Williams' layup with 33 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 75-all and forced the overtime.
