GREENWOOD – Lander softball picked up a pair of Peach Belt Conference weekly awards on Tuesday, as senior McKenzi Ferguson was named Pitcher of the Week, while Ashley Vinson earned Freshman of the Week accolades.
Ferguson has now earned three PBC Pitcher of the Week honors this season and four in her career, both program records. Vinson becomes the first freshman in program history to earn multiple PBC Freshman of the Week honors in a single season.
Lander's five weekly honors this season are a school record, surpassing the mark of four set in 1994.
Ferguson was phenomenal in the circle, throwing 20 innings while allowing just one run and recording 26 strikeouts, picking up three wins and a save. She tossed complete game shutouts against Emmanuel and Southern Wesleyan, then held Young Harris to one run in 9-1 win in game one Saturday. She came out of the bullpen to throw a scoreless seventh inning and seal the sweep for Lander in game two. Ferguson ranks first in the PBC in complete games, second in strikeouts, third in saves and strikeouts per game, and fourth in shutouts and innings pitched.
Vinson went 3-0 in the circle and came five outs away from a no-hitter on Thursday. She earned a win on Tuesday in 5-2 victory over Emmanuel, then held Southern Wesleyan without a hit for 5.1 innings before tossing her first complete-game shutout in Thursday's 6-0 win. Vinson limited Young Harris to one run on four hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings to give the Bearcats a sweep over the Mountain Lion. She has won each of her last four starts and now ranks fourth in the Peach Belt Conference in ERA.
The Bearcats wrap up the regular season on Friday with a PBC doubleheader against UNC Pembroke at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Senior Day at Doug Spears Field.
