Men’s soccer advances past UNCP in PBC tourney

GREENWOOD - Senior Aaron Brittain scored two goals and added one assist Tuesday night to lead the second-seeded Lander men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over seventh-seeded UNC Pembroke in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The Bearcats advance to Friday's semifinal round where they will play third-seeded Flagler, a 2-0, winner over sixth-seeded North Georgia, at 7:30 p.m. at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga.

The championship game is set for 3:30 Sunday at Blanchard Woods Park. Lander improves to 12-6 overall, while UNCP ends the season at 5-9-4.

Brittain, the 2008 PBC Player of the Year, scored the Bearcats first goal just 1:08 into the game on a header in front of the goal that was assisted by Andy Ludewig. Brittain, who has eight goals this season, extended the Bearcats lead to 2-0 when he punched in a missed Jamie Davison shot at 19:50.

UNCP closed the margin to 2-1 with 55 seconds left in the first half when Stuart Rodgers found the back of the net on a header that was assisted by Paul Freeman.

Lander's Craig Hughes netted his team-leading ninth goal of the season at 58:29 on an assist from Brittain directly in front of the goal.

The Bearcats scored the game's final goal at 77:43 on Andy Ludewig's header off a Davison assist.

Lander outshot UNCP, 17-5, but the Braves led in corner kicks, 4-2.
