GREENWOOD - Lander head men's basketball coach Jeff Burkhamer today announced that Ridgeville's Mario Pendarvis will transfer from Spartanburg Methodist College and join the Bearcats for the 2012-13 season.
Last season at Spartanburg Methodist, where he played for Coach Jeff Brookman, Pendarvis, a 6-6 power forward, averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game while shooting 47 percent from the field, including 41 percent from the three-point line, and 65 percent from the free throw line. He led the Pioneers to a 29-7 overall record, the Region X championship and a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament. He was selected the Region X Player of the Year and was named a second team NJCAA All-American.
"We believe Mario will provide an immediate impact on our basketball program," said Burkhamer. "He runs the floor in transition, scores from up to 20 feet, is a terrific rebounder on both ends of the floor and knows exactly what his role is within a team concept."
Pendarvis, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, will be counted on immediately to produce since both of Lander's starting post players from last year's team have exhausted their eligibility.
"Mario is a strong, athletic post player," added Burkhamer. "(He) fills a major need and gives us a solid situation in the post."
Pendarvis, who graduated from Spartanburg Methodist in June, plans to major in business.
"I feel this is a great opportunity for me academically and athletically," said Pendarvis. "I promised my parents that I would get my degree, so that is a major priority for me. On the court, I feel that I can solidify the post game and get immediate playing time. I really enjoyed their players and coaching staff."
