GREENWOOD – Lander head men's basketball coach Jeff Burkhamer announced today (July 5) that Dermaine Smith, a combo forward, has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Bearcats' program this fall.
Smith a 6-7, 215-pound native of Columbia, S.C., will transfer to Lander from Walters State (Tenn.) Community College. At Walters State, where he last played during the 2009-10 season, Smith averaged 3.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game while shooting 51 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free throw line.
He played his prep career at White Knoll High School under Coach Brett Jones. At White Knoll, he averaged 13 points and eight rebounds per game and was named to the All-State team.
"Dermaine is an incredible athlete," said Burkhamer. "He is hungry to prove that he can play in the Peach Belt Conference. He can run the floor, score in the post, shoot the three and can put the ball on the floor."
Smith will be counted on to replace two-year starter Jermel Kennedy.
"(He) is a long, athletic player who will fit in well with our style of play," added Burkhamer. "Dermaine gives us great flexibility since he can step out and play on the perimeter or post up in the paint."
He plans to major in mass communications.
"I feel this is a great opportunity for me academically and athletically," said Smith. "I promised my Mom that I would get my degree, so that is a major priority for me. I also feel that I can get immediate playing time due to my versatility."
