GREENWOOD - Lander's Dwight Tolbert, a 6-5, senior wing from Tifton, Ga., was selected as the 2011-12 Daktronics Division II Southeast Region Player of the Year for men's basketball, which was announced on Wednesday. In addition to his postseason award, Tolbert was also selected first team All-Southeast Region in the process.
He is joined on the All-Region first team by Georgia College's Ryan Aquino, Montevallo's D.J. Rivera, Mars Hill's Sammy Emile and Mount Olive's Craig Hayes.
With the first team selection, all five players are automatically eligible for Daktronics Division II All-American honors. The team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition. The team is voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Tolbert was key in Lander's turnaround season in which the Bearcats recorded their first winning record since the 2006-07 season at 18-9. Tolbert was selected Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year, leading the conference in scoring at 21.8 points a game and ranking third in 3-point percentage (.427). He had 18 games in which he scored 20 or more points, including six games of 30 or more points.
