ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Dwight Tolbert and Jermel Kennedy combined for 46 points Saturday afternoon to lead the Lander men's basketball team to an 80-62 Peach Belt Conference victory over Flagler College.
Lander improves to 15-7 overall and 8-6 in the PBC, while Flagler drops to 8-14, 2-13.
Tolbert connected on 9-of-15 shots, including 6-of-10 three pointers, and made both his free throws for 26 points. Kennedy, who had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, made 8-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-4 free throws. Dennis Rumph added 14 points, while Corey Wright had eight assists.
Flagler was led by Ante Gospic and Chad July, who scored 13 points apiece. July completed his double-double with 14 rebounds. Matt Clark added 12 points and Desmond Gibson 10.
After the Saints opened the game with leads at 2-0 and 4-2, Lander grabbed a 5-4 advantage at 17:30 on a Tolbert three pointer and led the remainder of the game.
Flagler cut the margin to 15-13 at 14:22 in the first half on a Gospic layup, then Lander went on 12-3 run to make it 27-16 on a David Pruett three with 10:31 left in the half.
The Saints gradually chipped at the lead and trailed by just four points at the half, 40-36.
Lander opened the second half on a 12-2 scoring spree to make it 52-38 on a Tolbert jumper with 15:51 left to play.
The Bearcats held a double-figure lead for most of the remainder of the game and notched its biggest margin at 20 points.
For the game, Lander connected on 26-of-60 field goals for 45 percent, including 9-of-22 threes for 40.9 percent. The Bearcats sank 17-of-21 foul shots for 81 percent.
Flagler netted 25-of-66 floor shots for 37.9 percent, including 6-of-24 threes for 25 percent. The Saints knocked down 6-of-7 free throws for 85.7 percent.
