Men's basketball falls to Montevallo, 77-67
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo's DJ Rivera and DeMarcus Catchings scored 22 and 21 points respectively Saturday afternoon to lead the Falcons' men's basketball team to a 77-67 Peach Belt Conference victory over Lander at BankTrust Arena.
Montevallo improves to 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the PBC, while Lander slips to 9-4, 3-3.
Lander's Dwight Tolbert scored a game-high 25 points after connecting on 8-of-13 field goals, including 4-of-8 threes, and 5-of-7 free throws. Corey Wright added 13 points and six assists. Jermel Kennedy led the team in rebounds with five.
The Falcons' Ryan May added 13 points in the victory, while Jonas Brown added 11 points. Catchings also led the team in rebounds with 10.
Montevallo, which won the battle of the boards, 36-23, connected on 27-of-53 field goals for 50.9 percent, including 6-of-17 threes for 35.3 percent. The Falcons also made 17-of-25 free throws for 68 percent.
Lander made 25-of-50 shots from the floor for 48 percent, including 5-of-13 treys for 38.5 percent. The Bearcats sank 14-of-19 foul shots for 73.7 percent.
After Lander took a 3-0 lead on a Tolbert jumper and a Darion Canty free throw with 19:19 left in the first half, Montevallo's May forced a 3-3 tie with a trey at 18:56.
From there, the Falcons led the game throughout the first half – where they held a 41-32 lead – until Lander regain the advantage at 50-49 on a pair of Tolbert free throws with 12:49 left to play.
A Tolbert three gave Lander a 53-49 advantage at 12:14, but Montevallo regained the lead at 54-53 on a Brown three and a pair of Rivera free throws with 11:13.
The Bearcats kept the game close (66-62) until the 5:34 mark when Montevallo went on an 11-5 run to finish the game.
