Bearcats score 13 runs in first three innings, sweep No. 24 Millersville

GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team got three hits apiece from Colton Yeager and Nathan Schreckengost and completed a sweep over No. 24-ranked Millersville 16-3 on a cold Sunday afternoon at Dolny Stadium.

The Bearcats, who led 13-0 after three innings, improved to 4-3 on the season. They also beat Millersville 7-1 Friday and 8-6 Saturday.

The Marauders begin their season at 0-3.

Yeager went 3-for-3 with two runs scored while Schreckengost was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Yeager went 8-for-13 in the series while Schreckengost was 7-for-13.

Bailey Connell went 2-for-2 with two walks and crossed the plate four times for Lander, giving him seven runs scored in the last two games.

Vincent Addona was 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Bearcats, Mike Fitschen went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI, and Roury Glanton was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.

Most of the Bearcats starters were lifted during the middle of the game.

Lander started fast with five runs in the first inning as temperatures hovered around 40 degrees. Connell drew a leadoff walk, Yeager singled, and Fitschen hit a run-scoring single to right. Schreckengost had an RBI infield single, Addona's single up the middle scored two more, and Zack Moore plated the final run of the inning on a ground out.

The Bearcats added two runs in the second when Connell singled, Yeager walked and Glanton hit a two-run single up the middle to make it 7-0.

Lander continued its hitting barrage in the third with six more runs. Moore was hit by a pitch, moved to third on Connell's double and scored on Yeager's sacrifice fly to center. Fitschen delivered a run-scoring double while Schreckengost, Carson Jones, Addona and Moore followed with RBI singles, making it 13-0.

The Bearcats upped their lead to 14-0 in the fourth when Connell walked, moved to third on Yeager's double and scored on Schreckengost's single to left.

Ben Snyder's double in the fifth scored Cole Friese for Millersville's first run of the game.

Eric Callahan's two-run single in the top of the seventh cut the Marauders deficit to 14-3. Lander center fielder Bo Richey made a diving catch of a sinking liner to end the inning.

The Bearcats added two runs in the seventh for a 16-3 lead. After the first two batters were retired, Ward Betts and Peter Bocchino singled and BJ Bush walked to load the bases. Tim Kranz hit an RBI single to left and Kyle Jenkins drew a bases-loaded walk.

Joseph Whitt was the starting pitcher for Lander, allowing no runs on only one hit in four innings. He walked four and struck out six. Carson Schlegel, Fraser Ellard, Chris Oakley, Erik Holton and Bryce Jackson pitched one inning apiece out of the Bearcat bullpen. Schlegel (1-0) was credited with the victory. Jackson, from nearby Abbeville, retired all three batters in the ninth including two strikeouts.

Drew Miller (0-1) was the losing pitcher for Millersville.
