GREENWOOD – Graham Ramos and Patrick Grady each had home runs, while Dylan Wolchik remained unbeaten on the mound Friday night as the No. 4-ranked Lander baseball team defeated GRU Augusta, 6-3, in a Peach Belt Conference game at Dolny Stadium.
The Bearcats, who claimed the first game of the PBC series, improve to 21-3 overall and 10-3 in the PBC, while GRU Augusta drops to 11-13, 3-7. The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.
Wolchik (5-0), the 2013 PBC Pitcher of the Year, earned the win with three strikeouts, one walk and three earned runs on eight hits in eight innings of work. Brandon White earned his sixth save of the season with three strikeouts in one inning pitched.
The Jaguars Frank Warren (2-2) suffered the loss with five strikeouts, two walks and six earned runs on six hits in three innings.
Lander's Patrick Grady opened the game's scoring in the first inning with a solo home run over the right field wall.
Augusta bounced right back in the second to take a 2-1 lead on back-to-back RBI doubles by Ryan Khan and Ross Miles.
Graham Ramos led off Lander's second inning with a solo shot over the left centerfield fence to tie the game at 2-2.
The Jaguars came right back in the third inning with another RBI double – this time by Hunter Boose – to take a 3-2 advantage.
Lander exploded for four runs in the third to take a 6-3 lead. Weston's Lawing got things going with an RBI single that scored Grady, Ramos drove in Thomas Berry with a double, and Painter's RBI single to deep right center field advanced Ramos and Lawing.
For Lander, Grady went 2-for-2, while Lawing and Ramos each batted 2-for-4.
Boose had two hits for the Jaguars.
