LU baseball moves up to No. 7 after West Chester sweep

GREENWOOD - After sweeping defending national champion and No. 2-ranked West Chester this past weekend, the Lander baseball team went from the land of receiving votes all the way to No. 7 this week in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's NCAA Division II poll which was released today (Feb. 11).

Lander (5-1 overall) opened the West Chester series on Friday with a 14-1 victory, then won 7-4 on Saturday and 5-0 on Sunday. The Bearcats were ranked No. 26 in the preseason, their highest preseason ranking ever, but bowed out of the rankings after losing to North Greenville, 18-15, in 10 innings in the first game of a home doubleheader on Feb. 2.

Mount Olive NC (6-0) sits atop the poll and is followed by: 2. Delta State (3-0), 3. Catawba (4-0), 4. Tampa (5-1), 5. USC Aiken (5-1), 6. West Florida (6-0), 7. Lander (5-1), 8. CSU-Chico (4-0), 9. Central Missouri (3-1), and 10. MSU-Mankato (0-0).

The second 10 are: 11. Franklin Pierce (0-0) and Angelo State (6-1), 13. Indianapolis (0-0), 14. Grand Valley State (0-0), 15. St. Marys (5-2), 16. Nova Southeastern (5-1), 17. UNC Pembroke (6-0), 18. St. Cloud State (2-1), 19. Tusculum (5-2), and 20. Alabama-Huntsville (6-1).

The final 10 are: 21. UC-San Diego (4-2), 22. Southern New Hampshire (0-0), 23. Belmont Abbey (6-0-1), 24. Le Moyne (0-0), 25. West Chester (0-3), 26. Armstrong Atlantic (6-0), 27. Cal Poly Pomona (7-0), 28. Southern Arkansas (5-2), 29. Mercyhurst (2-1), and 30. St. Edwards (5-2).
