  Jeff Burkhamer - Head Coach

Jeff Burkhamer   Alma Mater: Alderson-Broaddus '84
  E-mail: jburkhamer@lander.edu
  Office Phone: 864-388-8960

Jeff Burkhamer became only the fourth head men's basketball coach in Lander history when he was hired on March 26, 2009.

For the previous seven years, Burkhamer led Peach Belt Conference rival Armstrong Atlantic to a 134-73 record, including this year’s 23-7 mark. His overall 12-year head coaching record is 289-114, a .718 winning percentage. AASU advanced to the NCAA national tournament four times under Burkhamer, including this past season.

Prior to coaching at AASU, Burkhamer was the associate head coach at NCAA Division I Marshall University, helping guide the Thundering Herd to a 70-44 record in the Mid-American Conference.

He also served as the head coach at Santa Fe Community College (1994-98) in Gainesville, Fla. He led the Saints to two Mid-Florida Conference titles. He earned National Junior College Coach of the Year honors by College Sport Magazine in 1995-96 as the Saints set a school record 28 wins, including 21 straight to start the season. In four seasons, the Saints went 97-31 under Burkhamer.

From 1991-94, he was the assistant coach for the Grand Rapids Hoops of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), the developmental league of the NBA.

Burkhamer’s first head coaching position was at North Greenville College (1989-91), where he posted an overall 58-10 record in two seasons and earned NJCAA Region 10 Coach of the Year honors twice.

He started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Winthrop University (1984-85), then moved to Charleston Southern (1985-87) and Morehead State (1987-89).

A graduate of Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia, Burkhamer, who earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 1984 and his master’s in health and physical education from Morehead State in 1989, was a four-year letterman for the Battlers in basketball and baseball and holds the school’s all-time assist mark with 646. He was inducted into the Battler Hall of Fame in 2001 and was honored by the Parkersburg News and Sentinel in 2004 as a member of their silver anniversary team, spotlighting the top high school players from the Parkersburg area over the last 25 years.

Burkhamer and his wife Diane have two daughters, Melissa and Lindsey.

  Steve Roberts - Assistant Coach

Steve Roberts   Alma Mater: Lander '84
  E-mail: sroberts@lander.edu
  Office Phone: 864-388-8026

Steve Roberts, who is no stranger to the Lander basketball program, returns for his ninth year as an assistant coach.

A four-year letterman (1980-84), he graduated in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. While playing for Lander University, the then-Senators averaged 19 wins a season. Roberts is currently third in most games played in a career at Lander with 125 games.

Roberts is beginning his 25th year of coaching at the collegiate level. He started his career as a graduate assistant at Winthrop University under Neill Gordon for two years. Roberts coached at North Greenville College for one season before joining the staff at then-USC Spartanburg. In 1990-91, the Rifles advanced to the NAIA National Tournament and finished 5th in the country with a record of 29-3. The following season of 1991-92, Roberts helped lead the Rifles to the first inaugural Peach Belt Championship, a berth to the NCAA Tournament and a No. 7 final national ranking. After four seasons at USCS, Roberts worked as a Lander assistant for his former coach, Finis Horne.

Since 1994, Roberts has had the opportunity to be an assistant coach at Mars Hill College, Coastal Carolina University and Campbell University before returning to Mars Hill in 1999 as the head coach. After three seasons at Mars Hill, Roberts returned to Lander as an assistant for Coach Chipper Bagwell. Roberts has the distinction of being the only person to work for all four head coaches in the history of men’s basketball program at Lander.

"I am thankful to be a part of Lander athletics and it’s basketball program," said Roberts. "Being associated with Lander for 25 years, I see it as an opportunity for me and my family to be at a place that has good people, a good basketball tradition and excellent community support."

Roberts credits Coach Horne and his former high school coach, Harvey Tankersley,

as his biggest influences in his career.

"Both of these coaches passed on to me a great deal of knowledge of the game, but also stressed the importance of an education," said Roberts.

The Greenville native is married to the former Dana Lam of Waynesboro, Va. and they have two children, Matthew, 15, and Luke, 13.
