Bearcats claim third straight win, defeat Queens, 63-47

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Lander men's basketball team dominated Queens University of Charlotte for the first eight minutes of the second half en route to a 63-47 non-conference over the Royals Wednesday night.

In winning its third straight game, Lander goes over .500 for the first time this season at 3-2, while Queens drops to 4-2.

Brenton Harris led the Bearcats with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Tovi Bailey added 12 points and five rebounds and Dane Sparrow had 10 points.

Queens was paced by Antonio Stabler, who had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Daniel Bailey added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

After being tied at 8-8 at 15:15 in the first half, Lander went on a 11-2 run to take a 19-10 lead at 12:40 on a field goal by Deangelo Spruill. The Royals came back and cut the margin to 29-25 with 3:33 left in the half only to have Lander end the half with Dane Sparrow's three pointer and a 34-27 lead.

The Bearcats dominated early in the second half by going on a 17-4 run to take a 51-31 lead with 12:01 left in the game on a Brenton Harris field goal.

Queens cut the Bearcat lead to 15 points on several occasions, the last coming at 57-42 with 5:43 left.

Lander made 21-of-46 field goals for 41 percent, including only 4-of-15 three pointers for 26.7 percent. The Bearcats also made 9-of-14 free throws for 64.3 percent.

Queens was 12-of-33 from the field for 27.8 percent, including 3-of-21 from the three-point line for 14.3 percent. The Royals were 14-of-22 from the foul line for 63.6 percent.

Lander will host Newberry College at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, in a non-conference game.
