Men’s tennis earns berth in NCAA national tournament

GREENWOOD - The No. 18 ranked Lander men's tennis team learned Wednesday night it had earned a berth in the NCAA national tournament and will compete May 7-9 in the Southeast regional at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga.

The Bearcats (8-8), winners of 12 national championships, will open the tournament against Augusta State (10-10) on Thursday, May 7. Times have not been announced yet. The Lander/Augusta State winner will face host Armstrong Atlantic (24-1) in Friday's semifinals. During the regular season, Lander defeated Augusta State, 7-2, by winning just one of three doubles matches and sweeping the singles play.

In the other half of the bracket, Francis Marion (13-5) and Mars Hill (13-5) will face off for the right to play USC Aiken (18-4) in the semifinals. The regional championship match is set for Saturday, May 9.

The 16 regional champions will advance to the national championship tournament, May 13-16, in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The national tournament will be hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and Rollins College.
